Welcome to IMUM 2018

The 17th International workshop on Multi-scale (Un)-structured mesh numerical Modeling for coastal, shelf, and global ocean dynamic will be held in Hamburg, Germany, from September 11th to 14th, 2018. The workshop is organized by the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (Hamburg) and the Alfred-Wegener-Institut for Polar and Marine Research (Bremerhaven).

The first workshop in this series was held in Louvain-la-Neuve in 2002. Since then, the IMUM annual workshops have become a premier forum to report on, and advance, the state-of-the-art of unstructured-mesh modeling of the ocean, at multiple scales and in its interactions with freshwater and/or the atmosphere. The workshops have an informal and interactive style, and seek to balance high quality presentations with discussions on leading edge development, benchmarking and application of models.

Call for Papers

Presentations (oral or poster presentations) may focus on methods and applications for multiscale ocean modeling over a wide range of scales and physical processes including estuarine, coastal, and global flows as well as small-scale dynamics related to nonhydrostatic effects and overturning and mixing.

 Selected papers of IMUM 2018 can be published in a special issue of Ocean Dynamics. We encourage interested participants to consider this option.

Topics for IMUM 2018 include, but are not limited to:

  • Finite-volume, finite-element, or spectral methods

  • Numerical methods, including stability/accuracy analyses of existing methods, higher-order schemes, mimetic methods, pre-conditioners, advanced linear solvers

     

  • Transport schemes

     

  • Vertical coordinates and optimal horizontal/vertical grid design
  • Mesh generation

  • Adaptive mesh and/or polynomial refinement

  • Parallel methods and high-performance computing

  • Multiphysics applications including coupling to atmospheric, biogeochemical, wave, or sediment transport models

  • Data assimilation

  • Connecting the coastal to the global ocean
  • Model validation studies and methods
